Weigh the Strengths and Weaknesses of KB injections

KB injection is one of the contraceptive methods commonly used to delay pregnancy. But like other methods of contraception, family planning injections have several drawbacks and are not recommended for women who have certain health conditions. KB injections are hormonal contraceptives that contain a progestogen hormone (progestin), which is similar to a woman's natural hormone, progesterone. This can stop you from ovulating. Usually, birth control injections are injected in certain parts of your body, such as in the thighs, shoulders, under the abdomen, or upper arms. After being injected, hormone levels will increase and then decrease gradually until the next injection. Apart from injecting birth control, there are also other birth control devices that contain hormones, such as birth control pills and implant birth control. Based on the time period, in Indonesia there are two types of family planning injections that are most commonly used, namely family planning injection for 1 month and family planning injection for 3 months. 3-month KB injections contain progestin hormone, while 1-month KB injections contain a combination of progestin and estrogen.

3 month KB injection

3-month family planning injections can be injected into the buttocks or upper arms. There is also an injection into the skin layer in the abdomen or upper thigh area. 3-month KB injections prevent pregnancy by releasing the hormone progestin into the blood vessels. Progestin is a hormone similar to progesterone produced by the ovary. Progestin in 3-month KB injections works by stopping the release of eggs into the uterus, thus preventing fertilization. In addition, this hormone also prevents sperm from reaching the egg by thickening vaginal fluid and preventing fetal growth by thinning the lining of the uterus. Excess 3-month KB injection:
  • Do not interact with other drugs.
  • Relatively safe for nursing mothers
  • Useful for women who cannot use estrogen-containing contraception.
  • No need to bother remembering to take contraceptive pills every day.
  • No need to count first when having sex. Depending on the type, the injection can last up to 8-13 weeks.
  • If you want to stop, no need to bother having to see a doctor. Just stop using it.
  • Can reduce the risk of ovarian cancer and uterine cancer.
Besides being beneficial for you, 3-month KB injection also has disadvantages. Among them:
  • Can cause side effects such as headaches, weight gain, breast tenderness, bleeding, and irregular periods. This effect can continue to be felt for the duration of the injection, because the contents of the injection will continue to be in the body.
  • It can take up to a year after being stopped if you want to return to fertility. This makes this type of contraception not recommended for those who want to have children soon.
  • This injection is thought to be able to slightly reduce bone density, but it will return to normal if the KB injection is stopped.
  • Injecting type contraception does not provide protection from sexually transmitted diseases, so you need to keep using condoms during sexual intercourse.
However, 3-month family planning injections cannot be used by all women, especially in the following conditions:
  • A woman who feels that she is pregnant.
  • Women who want regular menstrual cycles.
  • Women who experience migraines, liver disorders, blood clots, have a history of heart disease, bleeding between menstrual periods, diabetes with complications, breast cancer, or a high risk of suffering from osteoporosis.

1 month KB injection

As the name implies, this KB is injected every 30 days. Not much different from 3-month KB injection, the purpose of 1-month KB injection is to prevent pregnancy. Compared to 3-month KB injections, 1-month KB injections have a lower risk of irregular bleeding and are more likely to have regular menstrual periods. In addition, the effects of fertility after the injection is stopped can return faster, within three months. However, there are some disadvantages which include:
  • The emergence of abnormal bleeding.
  • Lack of awareness and appeals related to the use of 1 month of family planning injections, so that it can cause someone to forget the injection schedule or tend to be lazy to do so.
  • Can cause dizziness and more sensitive breast or pain.
  • Can make mood changes.
  • In addition, women who have or experience migraines are not recommended to use birth control injections for 1 month.
  • Does not protect you from sexually transmitted infections.
Both types of family planning injections can generally be obtained at obstetricians, general practitioners, midwives, hospitals, and also health centers. If appropriate given to people who are not at risk, injection contraception will play a major role in regulating pregnancy.
